IDENTIFY YOUR GRASS

Different grass types have unique needs regarding sunlight, water and soil conditions. The most common grass types include:
Warm-Season Grasses: Like Kikuyu, Couch (Bermuda grass), Zoysia and Buffalo (St Augustine), flourish in warmer climates.
Cool-Season Grasses: Such as Kentucky Bluegrass, Perennial Ryegrass and Fescues, thrive in cooler climates.
To help identify your grass type, I highly recommend using Phone Apps like: Google Lens, Picture This and Apple’s Image Search

Warm Season Grass

Kikuyu Grass

Leaves: Coarse, bright green with boat-shaped tips.
Growth: Aggressive spread through above-ground stolons and underground rhizomes.
Root System: Robust and drought tolerant.
Seed Heads: Spike-like white seed heads emerge above the blades.
Climate: Thrives in warm climates, poor cold tolerance.
Feel: Dense, springy and cushion-like underfoot.
Appearance: Dense, lush and bright green.

Warm Season Grass

Couch Grass

Leaves: Fine-textured, dark green, with a smooth feel.
Growth: Spreads rapidly through rhizomes and stolons, forming a dense turf.
Root System: Deep and extensive, making it drought resistant.
Seed Heads: Produces slender, spike-like seed heads.
Climate: Prefers warm climates and will go dormant in winter.
Texture: Soft and fine to the touch.
Appearance: Forms a uniform, fine-textured and well-manicured lawn.

Warm Season Grass

Buffalo Grass

Leaves: Broad, soft and blue-green in colour, often with a curly tip.
Growth Pattern: Grows in dense mats, spreading through stolons.
Root System: Deep and extensive, enhancing drought tolerance.
Seed Heads: Produces seed heads on tall, slender stalks.
Climate: Prefers warm environments, with moderate cold tolerance.
Texture: Soft and plush underfoot.
Appearance: Creates a thick, cushiony lawn with a unique blue-green hue. Depending on variety, some will be lighter by appearance.

Warm Season Grass

Zoysia Grass

Leaves: Fine, stiff blades with a deep green colour, often rolling at the edges.
Growth: Spreads slowly through stolons and rhizomes, forming a dense carpet.
Root System: Deep and extensive, offering excellent drought resistance.
Seed Heads: Produces small, spikey seed heads.
Climate: Good tolerance to both heat and moderate cold.
Texture: Dense and firm to the touch.
Appearance: Forms a smooth, fine-textured and uniform lawn with a lush green appearance.

Cool Season Grass

Tall Fescue

Leaves: Coarse blades with a deep green colour, often showing a distinct central vein.
Growth Pattern: Grows in clumps rather than spreading, creating a bunch growth habit.
Root System: Deep root system, enhancing its drought and heat tolerance.
Seed Heads: Produces tall, slender seed heads that are noticeable above the leaf.
Climate: Adapts well to a variety of climates, with good cold / moderate heat tolerance.
Texture: Coarser and less dense compared to other lawn grasses.
Appearance: Forms a robust, thick turf with a slightly less uniform appearance due to its clumping growth.

Cool Season Grass

Perennial Ryegrass

Leaves: Fine, dark green blades with a glossy appearance on the underside.
Growth: Upright growth habit, forming a dense turf.
Root System: Shallow root system, requiring regular moisture.
Seed Heads: Produces slender, spike-like seed heads.
Climate: Prefers cool climates, with moderate heat tolerance.
Texture: Fine and soft, creating a smooth lawn surface.
Appearance: Provides a lush, finely textured and vibrant green lawn, often used in sports fields and lawns for its quick establishment.

Cool Season Grass

Kentucky Bluegrass

Leaves: Fine-textured, boat-shaped blades with a distinctive blue-green hue.
Growth: Spreads via underground rhizomes, forming a dense, uniform turf.
Root System: Moderate root depth, requiring adequate moisture for optimal growth.
Seed Heads: Produces pyramid-shaped seed heads on tall stalks (similar to poa).
Climate: Thrives in cool climates, with good cold tolerance but limited heat resistance.
Texture: Soft and plush, offering a comfortable feel underfoot.
Lawn: Forms a lush, dense turf with a striking blue/green colour.
