As we brace ourselves for the final stretches of winter, it's an ideal time to start thinking about the health and appearance of your lawn come springtime. You may be surprised to hear it, but an effective weed management strategy begins long before the first signs of spring appear. Today, I want to share valuable tips and techniques to help you curb weed growth, giving you a head start on a lush, vibrant lawn this spring. Let's ensure your lawn is ready to thrive when winter says goodbye and is free of unwelcome weeds!

Identify and Understand Your Weeds

All are not created equal. They have different life cycles (annual, biennial, perennial) and may propagate differently (seed, rhizome, stolon). This knowledge can help you form a more effective attack plan. Keep a lookout for early sprouting winter weeds like clover, burr medic, dandelion and more!

Bow and Arrow Herbicide is a great way to deal with winter broad leaf weeds.

Lonhro is an effective weed killer to remove onion grass, wintergrass and ryegrass in Kikuyu, Couch, Buffalo and Zoysia

Our Weed N Feed Bundle is a great way to feed your lawn and kill unwanted weeds in one application.

Early Spring Pre-Emergent Herbicide Application

The end of winter is the perfect time to apply pre-emergent herbicides. These create a barrier in the soil that prevents seeds from sprouting. Keep an eye on soil temperatures, as the best time to apply a pre-emergent herbicide is when the soil temperature is consistently between 10-13°C.

Keep Your Lawn Healthy

A healthy lawn is your best defence against weeds. By watering adequately (generally, lawns need about l3mm-25mm of water per week in the warmer months), mowing regularly, and fertilising appropriately, you are equipping your lawn to resist weed growth naturally.

Consider a slow-release fertiliser like Lawn Tips Stimulate or a liquid mix like the Lawn Tips Spring Mix to help strengthen your lawn and combat weeds naturally.

Consider Post-Emergent Herbicides for Perennial Weeds, like dandelion or clover, which may survive the winter and grow as temperatures rise. Post-emergent herbicides like bow and arrow can help kill these types of weeds. Always follow the label instructions when applying these herbicides.

Conclusion

Remember, a great lawn doesn't happen by accident. The end of winter is the perfect time to lay the groundwork for a successful, weed-free season. I am looking forward to the warmer months and helping you throughout this next season!
