When should I sow kikuyu seed?+
Kikuyu is a warm-season grass, so sow it in the warm months once soil temperatures are consistently above 18°C, with the best growth between 25°C and 30°C. Sowing into cold soil gives poor, patchy germination.
How long does it take to germinate?+
In warm soil you will usually see seedlings within one to three weeks. Warmth and consistent moisture are what move it along, so the warmer the soil the faster it comes up.
How much do I need?+
Sow at 1kg per 100m² for a new lawn. One kilogram covers about 100m², so measure your area first to work out how many bags you need.
How often should I water?+
Keep the surface moist with light daily watering until the lawn is established. Letting the seedbed dry out at this stage is the most common reason seed fails to take.
Will it go brown over winter?+
In cooler areas kikuyu can go dormant and lose some colour through the cold months, then green back up on its own as the weather warms. In warmer climates it stays green for more of the year.
