Spartan is a selective pre-emergent. It forms a barrier that stops weed seeds establishing, so you prevent the weeds rather than spraying them once they are already up.

How to use

What does a pre-emergent actually do?+
It stops weed seeds from establishing. Spartan forms a barrier in the soil and acts on the root tips of newly germinated weeds, so they cannot get going. It prevents weeds rather than killing ones already there.
When should I apply it?+
Before the weeds germinate. Apply in autumn to prevent Winter Grass and other winter weeds, and in late winter to early spring to prevent summer weeds. The barrier needs to be down before the seeds wake up.
Do I need to water it in?+
Yes. A pre-emergent has to be watered in after spraying so it settles into the soil and forms the weed barrier. Without watering in, it will not work properly.
Is it safe for my lawn?+
Spartan is a selective pre-emergent for a wide range of established lawns, not just warm-season turf. Turf tolerance and rates vary by grass type and situation, so always check the label for your grass type before you apply, and follow the rate it gives.
Will it kill weeds I can already see?+
No. Spartan does not control weeds that are already up. For weeds already growing, knock them down first with something like Bow & Arrow, then use Spartan to stop the next lot coming through.
