Soil Testing & Report

Soil Testing

Stop guessing. Start feeding your lawn with what it actually needs.

Your lawn’s real problems are underground. A soil test measures pH, finds nutrient deficiencies and exposes chemical imbalances you can’t see — so you treat the cause, not the symptom.

Samples are analysed by Westgate Labs. Results are emailed to you in 6–7 days from the date your sample is received.

Step 1 — Download

Get your forms

Print the sample request form, fill it in, and post a copy with your sample. The sampling guide is a one-page cheat sheet you can keep on your phone.

Why bother testing?

Stop wasting money

Most lawns are fed nutrients they already have. A test shows you what’s actually missing so every dollar you spend does something.

Fix pH first

If your pH is out, your lawn can’t take up nutrients no matter how much you apply. pH is the first thing a soil test tells you.

Solve the real problem

Thin, patchy or off-colour turf is often a soil problem, not a lawn problem. Test before you replace, re-turf or re-seed.

The 5 steps

From download to results in about a week.

1

Complete the form

Download the sample request form and fill in your name, address, email and mobile. Use one line per sample. For a lawn soil test the test code is S and the crop is Turf.

2

Collect your sample

Take small samples from 5 different areas around your yard and combine them — about 500g all up. Mixing several spots gives you a result that represents the whole lawn, not one odd corner. Put the soil in a zip lock bag and label it:

Your Name:   Joe Bloggs
Sample Name: Back Lawn
Crop:       Lawn
Test Type:   S - Soil Test
Date:       1/01/2026
3

Send the sample

Put the sample and a copy of your completed form in a satchel or box, and post it to the laboratory address shown on your sample request form.

Important: the lab can’t process a sample that arrives without its request form — always include a copy in the satchel.

4

Get your results

Results are emailed to you 6–7 days from the date the lab receives your sample.

5

Amend your soil

Now you can make informed decisions and build a program around what your soil is actually short of — saving you time and money. Not sure how to read your results? Send them through to us and we’ll help you work out a plan.

Send us your form

Let us know your sample is on its way. Fill this in and we’ll keep an eye out for your results, then help you turn them into a plan.

Sending the form itself: email your completed PDF to help@lawntips.net. You still need to post a printed copy in the satchel with your sample — the lab can’t process it otherwise.
