Why Gypsum Greens Grade

Break up heavy clay without touching your pH

Got hard clay or compacted soil that water just runs off? Gypsum opens up the structure so water and roots get down into the profile, and it does it without changing your soil pH.

  • Breaks up heavy clay and compacted soil
  • Improves drainage and root penetration
  • Does not change soil pH, so it is safe on any soil
  • Greens grade 0-2mm prill, fine enough for low-cut turf
How to use

Open up the soil in three steps

1
Check

If water pools or runs off and the ground is hard and compacted, you have clay that gypsum can open up.

2
Spread

Spread evenly with a spreader at the label rate across the lawn.

3
Water in

Water it in well, ideally before rain or irrigation, so it works down into the profile.

How it compares

Gypsum and lime do different jobs. Gypsum is for heavy clay, lime is for acidic soil. Here is how Gypsum stacks up against lime and against leaving the soil as it is.

Questions

Good to know

How do I know if my lawn needs gypsum?+
If water pools or runs off, the ground feels hard and compacted, and roots struggle to get down, you have clay that gypsum can open up. If your problem is acidic soil rather than clay, lime is the one you want instead.
How much do I use?+
Apply at 1kg per 100m², spread evenly with a spreader. On badly compacted clay you can repeat it, but start at the label rate and water it in well.
How often should I apply it?+
You can apply it any time of year. Gypsum works on the soil structure over time, so on heavy clay a repeat application down the track helps, rather than it being a regular feed.
Will it change my soil pH?+
No. That is the point of gypsum. It breaks up clay and improves structure without changing the pH, so it is safe to use on any soil. If you actually need to raise an acidic pH, that is a job for lime.
Is it safe around pets and kids?+
Once it is spread and watered in, the lawn is fine for pets and kids. As with any garden product, keep them off while you are spreading, water it in, and store the bag away.
How long until I see a result?+
Gypsum works on the soil over time, not the leaf, so it is not an instant green-up. On heavy clay you will notice water soaking in better rather than pooling over the following weeks, and roots get down deeper from there.

Open up hard, compacted soil

If water runs off and your clay is rock hard, gypsum breaks it up so water and roots get down, without touching your pH.
