Warm-season grasses (Kikuyu, Couch): sow in spring or early summer when soil temperatures are consistently above 18°C. Cool-season grasses (Ryegrass, Fescue): sow in autumn or early spring when soil temperatures are 10–18°C.
Clear weeds and debris, rake the soil to break up the top 1–2 cm, level the surface, and apply a starter fertiliser. After sowing, lightly cover the seed with a thin layer of soil or compost (no more than 3–5 mm) and keep moist until germination.
New lawn establishment uses a higher rate (e.g. 5 kg/100m² for ryegrass) to get full coverage from scratch. Oversowing existing turf to thicken it up or repair bare spots uses a lower rate (e.g. 3 kg/100m²) because there's already grass in place.
Ryegrass germinates in 5–10 days under ideal conditions. Couch and Kikuyu take longer — typically 10–21 days. Keep the seed bed consistently moist (light watering 2–3 times a day) until the grass is established.
Yes, but choose compatible types — ryegrasses blend well together (e.g. perennial ryegrass + fescue). Mixing warm-season (couch, kikuyu) with cool-season grasses generally isn't recommended unless you want a transitional lawn.
